On Wednesday, U.S. snowboard star Shaun White announced he will not be competing in the Olympic debut of the snowboard slope style event. The athlete’s announcement came after his sustained a wrist injury while taking a practice run on the course. Another competitor from Norway suffered a broken collar bone on the same course this week.
“After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in half pipe for Team USA,” White told NBC News in a statement. “The difficult decision to forego slope style is not one I take lightly as I know how much effort everyone has put into holding the slope style event for the first time in Olympic history, a history I had planned on being a part of.”
To show off just how crazy the slope style course is, Russian Olympian Alexey Sobolev wore a portable GoPro camera on a recent practice run. So now you can experience what is turning into what is certainly one of the most dangerous Olympic events this year.
