Fmr. Head of Meteorological Assoc.: We've Forgotten How to be Cold Because of Global Warming

Dr. Marshall Shepherd, the former head of the American Meteorological Association, appeared Sunday on CBS’ Face the Nation to opine on winter weather affecting the East Coast while a drought impacts the West. He said that the public has largely forgotten how to cope with severe winter weather because those events have become rarer as global warming accelerates.

Shepherd began by criticizing climate skeptics who have said that the existence of cold weather in winter controverts the theory of man-made global warming. He said that this reaction was like saying “because it’s nighttime, the sun doesn’t exist anymore.”

Shepherd added that winter weather is also the result of climate change in the same way that as warm weather is the result of climate change. “We know that climate change is happening and humans are contributing,” he asserted.

“I think we’ve forgotten how to be cold or deal with snowstorms, because we’re seeing so few of these big storms like we’ve seen,” he added. “And that probably is because of climate warming.”

He closed by warning, however, that the public has to be cautious not to blame every weather event on climate change.
