The Five Clashes over American Ignorance: Triumph of Progressiveness in Education

The Five today took on Bill O’Reilly‘s assertion that the failing public school system is mainly to blame for widespread ignorance in America, as well as the rise of technology in people’s lives. Eric Bolling agreed with O’Reilly, arguing that reliance on technology means no one can ever actually learn about things as basic as spelling and addition. And, in a hilarious coincidence of timing, Jimmy Kimmel also helped expose American ignorance last night with a segment interviewing people who actually believed that FDR died yesterday.

Bob Beckel found it “somewhat elitist” to assume the rest of the country is that politically aware, and defended the internet as a place where, for better or worse, people get their information from. Greg Gutfeld agreed, blaming “the triumph of progressivism in education” over technology when it comes to a lack of knowledge.

Bolling cited statistics showing how America’s fallen behind in math and science, among other subjects, saying “this is a massive fail on our part.” Beckel suggested having “competency tests for teachers” to make sure they’re teaching kids right.

GOP Rep Clashes with Bill Nye, David Gregory over How to Address Climate Change

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday to debate former television host Bill Nye about the effects of climate change and how best to address those impacts through public policy. Blackburn also spent much of the interview debating Meet the Press host David Gregory who asked a series of pointed questions of the GOP representative which challenged her underlying assumptions.

Gregory began by citing a post in The Atlantic which summarized the Republican position on man-made global warming as acknowledging it exists but being wary of the proposed remedies which would negatively impact economic growth. “The fix can be very expensive in the short-term for long-term gain,” Gregory said.

Blackburn countered by asserting that “there is not consensus” that a slight increase in carbon in the atmosphere has resulted in widespread environmental effects. She cited a series of academic reports that challenge the notion of consensus.

Gregory interrupted the congresswoman and insisted that there is, in fact, consensus and that energy providers are actively attempting to manage their emissions. “The issue is what actions are taken and would they really work,” Gregory insisted.

“The congresswoman is trying to introduce doubt,” Nye insisted, “in the whole idea of climate change.”

Gregory agreed and said that the east coast is regularly dealing with “the realities” of climate change after a series of weather events. He asked how those governments should deal with those weather events which are the result of climate change.

Blackburn said there are “social costs” of carbon emissions, but there are also benefits relating to agricultural production. She concluded by noting that U.S. carbon emissions are as low as they have been since 1994, but they are on the rise in other nations and any solution to that issue must be a global one.

Megyn Kelly Clashes with Carville over Obama's Shots at Fox: Bush Never Did This About MSNBC!

Megyn Kelly squared off with James Carville on Tuesday about President Obama taking multiple snipes at Fox News during his big Super Bowl interview with Bill O’Reilly, with Kelly telling Carville that George W. Bush never complained this much about MSNBC when he was in office.
The segment kicked off with Carville brushing off Hillary Clinton‘s Super Bowl Sunday tweet about seeing someone else “getting blitzed and sacked,” dismissing it as a joke that people really shouldn’t be reading int.
But things got more heated when Kelly brought up Obama’s comments, finding it a little silly for the president to be taking such broad shots at a cable network.
“Is it embarrassing enough for the President of the United States to be complaining about a cable channel? I mean, President Bush never did this about MSNBC!”
Carville shot back that the Bush team was always complaining about the liberal media, and told Kelly that Fox News needs to stop being so defensive every time he says Fox is a right-wing network and just embrace their identity. Kelly just thought it was silly for Obama to be “complaining about his coverage when he’s got most of the mainstream media in his pocket.”
